2016-2017 Portsmouth Trojans Game Scores and Highlights

First game of the season: Portsmouth 47, Waterford 44..........the Trojans trailed the Wildcats 32-21 at halftime, but Coach Eugene Collins decided to press Waterford after the break, and it was the difference in the game. WHS scored only 12 points after halftime, and Portsmouth forced 17 turnovers. 6-3 senior Kendal Reynolds came through with some clutch baskets/FT's in the final 2 minutes. PHS still trailed 38-32 going into the 4th quarter, but won the battle in the final frame 15-6.

The OVC Preview 2016-2017

The Portsmouth Trojans will start their 3rd season of Ohio Valley Conference play in 2016-2017. Last season, the Fairland Dragons won the conference crown with a perfect 14-0 league mark. Fairland returns all 5 starters from a year ago, plus several key players off the bench. The Dragons starting 5 were all sophomores a year ago, and still they advanced to the district finals where they lost to eventual regional champion Lynchburg Clay. FHS should be a prohibitive favorite to capture another OVC crown.

Portsmouth Trojans 2016-2017 News and Notes/Schedule

Within the next month, I should have enough info to post a preview of the upcoming 2016-2017 basketball season for the Trojans. The 2016-2017 schedule is posted below.

Kyre Allison Signs With Marshall University

Portsmouth's Kyre Allison has signed to play basketball at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. Marshall is a member of Conference USA. It has been a tremendous senior year for Kyre. He became PHS's all time leading scorer, ending with 1,688 points, he was named the SE D3 POY, and then was named Ohio D3 Co-POY. Kyre most likely will play PG at Marshall. Congratulations to Kyre on another great accomplishment in his career, fulfilling a dream of playing the sport he loves at the D1 level.

Portsmouth Trojans Highly Ranked in Final 4 Wins

The Portsmouth Trojans have a decorated state tournament history. PHS is tied for 2nd in state appearances (with Cleve.Villa-Angela St.Joseph), 2nd in number of decades making the state tournament (8), tied for 4th in state championship game appearances (8), and tied for 6th in state championships won (4). I researched a new category of state tournament performance, and once again the Trojans are among the elite programs. Below is listed the total number of wins in Final 4 play after the 2016-2017 state tournament:

Kyre Allison-- 2016 D3 Player of the Year in Ohio

Kyre Allison has added another prestigious honor to his outstanding career. He was named Tuesday the D3 Player of the Year in Ohio. He shares the award with Dantez Walton of #1 ranked Lima Central Catholic. Kyre had already garnered the SE District D3 POY award, and he also became the Trojans' all time leading scorer with 1,688 points. He grabbed 600 rebounds in addition to his scoring prowess.

He joins Dion McKinley as the only Trojans to win state POY in their division. Dion accomplished his D3 state POY award in 2012.

Best 5 Year Runs in Portsmouth History

The Portsmouth Trojans have had some remarkable 5 year runs of outstanding basketball. Currently, under Coach Eugene Collins, the Trojans have compiled a very good 94-33 record from 2011-2015. That ranks as the 4th best 5 year run in PHS history. Here are the top five 5 year periods of Trojan basketball in terms of winning pct.:

Kyre Allison Now All-Time Leading Scorer in PHS history--Update Feb.26,2016

The 2015-2016 season should be a memorable one from a historical standpoint. 6-2 senior point guard Kyre Allison, barring injury, should become the Trojans' all-time leading scorer. Currently, Craig Tubbs (1979) holds the top spot with 1,485 points. Allison, who currently has 1,167 points in his career, should pass Tubbs late in the 2015-2016 season. Kyre has started since he was a freshman, and against Logan his first season, scored 26 points, leading PHS to a win at LHS. Those 26 points tied Andrew Bendolph's freshman mark set in the 2008 season, when Bendolph scored his vs. Chillicothe.
