Important Notice About Basketball Season 2020-2021

Because of the restrictions that have been put in place in regards to mask wearing and limited attendance, I don't plan on attending any basketball games this season. However, I will still try to keep this site updated as accurately and promptly as possible. I will not be doing a full preview of the basketball season since I will not be attending any practices or games. I can say though that the Trojans have 4 starters returning........SR Miles Shipp, JR Drew Roe, JR Amare Johnson, and JR Donovan Carr.

History of "Captain Trojan"

One of the most recognizable figures over the years at PHS basketball games has been "Captain Trojan". Two of the most well known "Captains" were Greg "Bubba" Hickman and Stephen Hunter. Hickman was the original "Captain" which started in the 1980's. Hickman wore red and blue tights with a mask and cape. He would come to center court and spell "T R O J A N" and the crowd joined in. Then he would irritate the opposing team by sliding into their huddle. He would quite often get kicked but it didn't deter him from his goal of revving up the spirit of the crowd.

Updating/Adding Content

WIth the library being shut down due to the Covid-19 pandemic, I have been unable to add or update any content. When the PPL opens up again, I will review the articles to ensure they are updated as accurately as possible, and add anything that I think is significant enough to be included in the inventory. Thanks for your patience and interest in this site, and as always, GO TROJANS!!

With a 72-61 win over Coal Grove on 1/14/20, Coach Eugene Collins passed Richard "Red" Hopkins into 2nd place on the all time winningest coach list in Portsmouth HS history.
