Portsmouth Trojans in KSA Tournament Dec.27-30

The Portsmouth Trojans will travel to Florida to play in the KSA Holiday Tournament in Orlando on Dec.27-30. This will be the Trojans' 4th trip to the tournament, and in 3 previous trips have compiled a very good 7-2 record, winning it with a 3-0 record in their very first year of participation. The roster of teams is listed below, and PHS has been already advanced past the first round due to a scheduling snafu. Portsmouth was to play Wade Christian(FL) on 12/27, but has already been credited for a win, and now will play the winner of The Priory School (CA) vs.

Portsmouth Trojans 2019-2020 Preview/Game Results

The Portsmouth Trojans return 4 starters from an 8-16 season a year ago. 6-3 senior Matthew Fraulini, 6-2 junior Miles Shipp, 5-8 sophomore Drew Roe, and 5-8 sophomore Amare Johnson all return to give the Trojans an experienced lineup. Johnson started in a number of games, came off the bench in some others, but I have counted him as a returning starter.

Trojan Senior Matthew Fraulini Is 215 Points Short of 1,000

Portsmouth Trojan senior Matthew Fraulini is only 218 points short of scoring 1,000 points for his career. The 6-2 Fraulini has already established a new single game scoring record with his 46 point performance vs. Rock Hill last season. Despite being double teamed at times last season, Fraulini still averaged a very respectable 17 PPG, with a number of games well over 20.

Update Notice 8/23/2019

On Page 8 of the inventory is the updated listing of team all time wins in Ohio. Portsmouth was previously listed at 8th, but with newly updated figures, PHS has dropped 2 spots to 10th. Portsmouth's record is updated through 2019, but many of the schools listed have their records updated only through 2017. Even with that, the Trojans are 52 wins ahead of 11th place Steubenville, which has records updated through 2017, so PHS should still be 10th place.

Updated records for all schools listed is provided by the OHSAA boys basketball website, team records section. (OHSAA.org)

Mike Haley To Be Inducted Into The Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame

Portsmouth HS graduate Mike Haley, who started on the 1961 Class AA State Champion Trojans, will be inducted into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame on June 6, 2020. Haley's 1981 and 1982 Dayton Roth teams which won back to back state titles will also be recognized. Haley, who averaged 22.0 PPG on the 61 Trojans, went on to an outstanding career at Ohio University. He later coached Dayton Roth HS and Dunbar HS to 4 state titles. His teams at Dayton were known for full court pressing and creating havoc for opponents.

Update Notice 4/19/2018

Because of Akron St.Vincent-St.Mary's 2018 D2 state title, a couple of items had to be updated. Those included the all time leaders in state tournament games played and all time leaders in state tournament wins. SVSM passed Portsmouth into 3rd place for the all time number of state tournament wins, with 18, compared to Portsmouth's 16. The Trojans are now tied for 4th with Middletown with those 16 wins. Also, the Irish now have played in 25 state tournament games, passing Middletown into 4th place all time. Portsmouth remains in 3rd with 27 state games played.

The 1925 Portsmouth Trojans District Championship and State Tournament Team

The 1925 Portsmouth Trojans has the distinction of being the first PHS squad to advance to the state tournament, which was started by the OHSAA in 1923. The first of Portsmouth's 15 state appearances had a regular season record of 11-2. PHS opened the season with a win over Piketon, and then followed that with wins over Portsmouth West and Portsmouth East. PHS swept Ironton, and Ashland KY suffered the same fate, with one of the games being a 36-11 blowout. Portsmouth nipped Chillicothe, then split with Huntington WV by the same scores in both games of 28-21.
