Phil Whitehead Joins the 1,000 Point Club at PHS

After doing the research on Phil Whitehead, who played for the Trojans from 1988-1991, he has officially joined the 1,000 point club at PHS. Whitehead scored 1,027 points in his career. He still managed to join the coveted 1,000 point mark despite missing several games his senior year due to injury. He needed 329 points his final season to reach 1,000. His high game was 30 vs. Boyd County. He played on the 1988 D2 state championship team, and he reached the D2 state championship game in 1990 as the Trojans lost to Dayton Colonel White 71-57.

Patrick Tubbs Joins the 1,000 Point Club at PHS

Matthew Fraulini scored his 1,000 point last Tuesday vs. Rock Hill. Fraulini now has 1,045 points (as of 2/6) and is the 10th leading scorer in PHS history. I decided to do research on Patrick Tubbs, who started for 3 years for the Trojans from 1986-1988. He scored a total of 396 points his sophomore year, 461 points his junior year, and 440 points his senior season, for a total of 1,297 points. That total puts him 41 points ahead of Jeff Lisath's 1,256 for 5th place all time.

Coach Eugene Collins Is Now The 2nd Winningest Coach in PHS History

With a 72-61 win over Coal Grove on 1/14/20, Coach Eugene Collins passed Richard "Red" Hopkins into 2nd place on the all time winningest coach list in Portsmouth HS history. Collins, whose career record is now 169-87, broke a tie with Hopkins, who went 168-58 from 1926-1936. Collins took over as head coach of the Trojans in the 2009-2010 season, and immediately turned the fortunes of the program around, going 12-7. The previous decade before his arrival saw the Trojans compile the worst record for a decade in school history, going 100-121.

Portsmouth Trojans in KSA Tournament Dec.27-30

The Portsmouth Trojans will travel to Florida to play in the KSA Holiday Tournament in Orlando on Dec.27-30. This will be the Trojans' 4th trip to the tournament, and in 3 previous trips have compiled a very good 7-2 record, winning it with a 3-0 record in their very first year of participation. The roster of teams is listed below, and PHS has been already advanced past the first round due to a scheduling snafu. Portsmouth was to play Wade Christian(FL) on 12/27, but has already been credited for a win, and now will play the winner of The Priory School (CA) vs.

Portsmouth Trojans 2019-2020 Preview/Game Results

The Portsmouth Trojans return 4 starters from an 8-16 season a year ago. 6-3 senior Matthew Fraulini, 6-2 junior Miles Shipp, 5-8 sophomore Drew Roe, and 5-8 sophomore Amare Johnson all return to give the Trojans an experienced lineup. Johnson started in a number of games, came off the bench in some others, but I have counted him as a returning starter.

Trojan Senior Matthew Fraulini Is Now the 9th Leading Scorer in PHS History

Portsmouth Trojan senior Matthew Fraulini is now the 9th leading scorer in PHS history. He scored 8 points vs. Western in the Waverly sectional tournament and now has 1,088 points. The 6-2 Fraulini has already established a new single game scoring record with his 46 point performance vs. Rock Hill last season. Despite being double teamed at times last season, Fraulini still averaged a very respectable 17 PPG, with a number of games well over 20.

Update Notice 8/23/2019

On Page 8 of the inventory is the updated listing of team all time wins in Ohio. Portsmouth was previously listed at 8th, but with newly updated figures, PHS has dropped 2 spots to 10th. Portsmouth's record is updated through 2019, but many of the schools listed have their records updated only through 2017. Even with that, the Trojans are 52 wins ahead of 11th place Steubenville, which has records updated through 2017, so PHS should still be 10th place.

Updated records for all schools listed is provided by the OHSAA boys basketball website, team records section. (OHSAA.org)

Mike Haley To Be Inducted Into The Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame

Portsmouth HS graduate Mike Haley, who started on the 1961 Class AA State Champion Trojans, will be inducted into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame on June 6, 2020. Haley's 1981 and 1982 Dayton Roth teams which won back to back state titles will also be recognized. Haley, who averaged 22.0 PPG on the 61 Trojans, went on to an outstanding career at Ohio University. He later coached Dayton Roth HS and Dunbar HS to 4 state titles. His teams at Dayton were known for full court pressing and creating havoc for opponents.
