The 1963 Portsmouth Trojans won their 3rd district title in 4 years, as they defeated AP #6 unbeaten 21-0 Marietta. In the regular season, the Trojans conquered Columbus Eastmoor, Lancaster, Chillicothe 75-67, Ironton twice, Lima 76-62, Springfield South 50-38, and beat Hamilton Garfield twice, 73-61 and 60-59. PHS lost to Middletown twice. Portsmouth at one point of the season was tied with Logan for 19th in the AP Poll.

In the tournament, Portsmouth had to accomplish the rare feat of having to win 3 games to reach the district tournament. They beat Minford 73-42, Valley 64-36, and Northwest 72-65 to face Jackson in the district opener. PHS won that game 56-43 to face Marietta for the district title. After ending the Tigers season, the Trojans' season came to an end in the regional semifinal vs. Columbus East, as the squad from Franklin County bested PHS 71-52. East would go on to win the Class AA state title.
