Here are some individual scoring statistics from the regular season and the tournament:
Aaron Smith was recently named the 30th head basketball coach in PHS history. Smith takes over for Jeff Lisath, who resigned his position as HC and returned to the Dayton Northridge schools, where he was serving as Asst.Supt. Smith played for the Trojans in the early 2000's, and was a member of the 2004 sectional championship team that upset South Point, then PHS went on to defeat Albany Alexander in the district semifinals.
I have added some content about the Lady Trojans on this site, because I feel that with the title being "Portsmouth Trojans Basketball", that presenting some material about them is necessary and appropriate. While this site has been since its inception in 2011 primarily a Portsmouth boys basketball website, and will continue to be so, there will be some inclusion about the Lady Trojans.
The 2023-24 Lady Trojans became the 1st Portsmouth girls basketball team to make the Final 4. PHS tied for the OVC title with Fairland posting a 13-1 conference mark, and rolled through the sectional, district, and regional tournaments without being seriously challenged. The closest game in the tournament up to the Final 4 was a 42-25 win over North Adams in the regional final at Logan HS.
Having successful seasons by both boys and girls has led to a large number of individual awards.
Trojan Boys Awards:
1. DeAndre Berry made 2nd team all-state, 1st team all-SE district, and 1st team all-OVC.
2. Donnovan Breech made Honorable Mention All-State, 2nd team all-SE district and 1st team all-OVC.
3. Malachi Loper made 3rd team all-OVC, and Honorable Mention SE district.

Trojan senior to be DeAndre Berry is set to become the school's next 1,000 scorer. He is around 320 points shy of that mark, and considering he averaged almost 17 PPG as a junior, should reach 1,000 points rather easily barring any significant injury.
Update 12/16/23: Berry now has 786 points after 4 games of the 2023-24 season. He scored 18 vs. Lawrence Co. KY, 24 vs. Portsmouth Notre Dame, 30 vs. Rock Hill, and 31 vs. Gallia Academy.

Our own Jeff Lisath, a 1978 graduate of Portsmouth HS, was named as the next boys basketball coach on Thursday at the regular PCSD school board meeting. Lisath, who won a state championship as a player in 1978, takes over one of Ohio's most decorated programs. Lisath has a long coaching resume, having done stints at Columbus State, Chillicothe HS girls, and boys HC at Unioto, Piketon, and Dayton Northridge. He currently is the Asst. Supt. of the Dayton Northridge schools.
