Portsmouth has a very good 16-11 record overall in the state tournament; 12-7 in Final 4 play. The 27 games played in the state tournament ranks 1st in the SE district by a wide margin. Marietta has played in the 2nd most with 15, Glenford (no longer exists) played in 12, Wheelersburg has played in 8, while the Waterloo Wonders played in 7. Chillicothe and Ironton have only played in 4 state tournament games each.

The OHSAA state tournament began in 1923 with a Sweet 16 format. Starting in 1925, it was changed to an Elite 8 format and stayed that way until 1935. From 1936-1942 the format reverted back to a Sweet 16 format. After 1942, a Final 4 format was introduced, and has stayed that way since.
