The Portsmouth Trojans have a decorated state tournament history. PHS is 4th in state appearances, 2nd in number of decades making the state tournament (8), tied for 4th in state championship game appearances (8), and tied for 6th in state championships won (4). I researched a new category of state tournament performance, and once again the Trojans are among the elite programs. Below is listed the total number of wins in Final 4 play after the 2018-2019 state tournament:

1. Akron SVSM............................................22
2. Cleveland VASJ.......................................20
3. Middletown..............................................16
4. Canton McKinley.....................................14
5. Tie......PORTSMOUTH............................12.........Last win 2012 vs. Ottawa-Glandorf D3 state semis
5. Tie......Dayton Dunbar.............................12
7. Columbus East........................................11
8. Delphos St.John's...................................10

The win over Ottawa-Glandorf in the 2012 state semifinals was the last state tournament win by a SE district school.

The Trojans have an all time state tournament record of 16-11, which includes the Elite 8 and Sweet 16 formats of the OHSAA state tournament in its early years. Portsmouth's Final 4 record is a very good 12-7.
