There are about 821 high schools in the state of Ohio, most of which field a basketball team. Portsmouth has only missed the state tournament from 1950-59 and 2000-09. The OHSAA state tournament began in 1923. The Trojans have played in a state championship game in 6 different decades (1930's, 1960's, 1970's, 1980's, 1990's, and 2010's). PHS has made the Final 4 in 7 different decades (1920's, 1930's, 1960's, 1970's, 1980's, 1990's, and 2010's). The 1925, 1926, 1939, and 1941 state appearances were not Final 4 appearances. The state tournament was either an Elite 8 or Sweet 16 format in those days.
Updated on May 8, 2014 to include Portsmouth's 62st sectional championship, which was won this year with a 55-53 victory over Lynchburg Clay. Junior Sky Oliver made a jumper at the buzzer for the win.
Updated on Nov.12, 2015 to include Portsmouth's 63nd sectional championship, which was won in March 2015 with a 71-55 win over West Union at Waverly HS. Updated on Nov.12, 2016 to include Portsmouth's 37th district championship, won in March 2015 with a 59-46 win over Chesapeake. Updated on 12/21/2017 to include Portsmouth's 64th sectional title, beating North Adams in the sectional at Waverly.
