Here are some miscellaneous categories of Portsmouth's rank in the State of Ohio and in the Southeastern District:

1. State tournament appearances: 15..............State Rank: 4th..........Canton McKinley is 1st with 28

2. Number of games played in state tournament: 27........4th (previously tied with Akron SVSM through 2020)

3. Number of games won in state tournament: 16.......Tied for 4th with Middletown (PHS overall record 16-11)

4. State Championships: 4...............................State Rank: Tied for 8th.........Akron SVSM has 10, Middletown, Cleveland VASJ have 7, Columbus East, Dayton Dunbar, Cincinnati Moeller, Cleveland Heights Lutheran East have 5.

5. State Championship Game Appearances: 8.........State Rank: Tied For 5th.........Cleveland VASJ has 12, Akron SVSM 12, Canton McKinley 11, Middletown has 9

6. Number of Decades Making the State Tournament: 8...........State Rank: 2nd..........Canton McKinley is 1st, only missing the state tournament from 2010--present

7. District Championships: 37.........................SE District Rank: 1st.........Wheelersburg is 2nd with 21

8. Sectional Championships: 65.....................SE District Rank: 1st.........Chillicothe is 2nd with 38. PHS won its 65th sectional March 2024 with a 74-42 win over Piketon.

All-time Final 4 Record: 12-7

There are about 821 high schools in the state of Ohio, most of which field a basketball team. Portsmouth has only missed the state tournament from 1950-59 and 2000-09. The OHSAA state tournament began in 1923. The Trojans have played in a state championship game in 6 different decades (1930's, 1960's, 1970's, 1980's, 1990's, and 2010's). PHS has made the Final 4 in 7 different decades (1920's, 1930's, 1960's, 1970's, 1980's, 1990's, and 2010's). The 1925, 1926, 1939, and 1941 state appearances were not Final 4 appearances. The state tournament was either an Elite 8 or Sweet 16 format in those days.

Updated on May 8, 2014 to include Portsmouth's 62st sectional championship, which was won this year with a 55-53 victory over Lynchburg Clay. Junior Sky Oliver made a jumper at the buzzer for the win.

Updated on Nov.12, 2015 to include Portsmouth's 63nd sectional championship, which was won in March 2015 with a 71-55 win over West Union at Waverly HS. Updated on Nov.12, 2016 to include Portsmouth's 37th district championship, won in March 2015 with a 59-46 win over Chesapeake. Updated on 12/21/2017 to include Portsmouth's 64th sectional title, beating North Adams in the sectional at Waverly.
