The Portsmouth Trojans made 4 appearances in the OHSAA state tournament in the 1920's. Here is some info about each of those teams:

1925
Record: 11-2   Coach: Gail Vanoorsdall
Notable wins: Swept Ironton and Ashland(KY) twice, beat Chillicothe, Huntington, Portsmouth West, Portsmouth East
Special note: The OHSAA state tournament was formatted in a Sweet 16 at this time
State tournament result: Lost to Springfield in the Elite 8 (Springfield won the state title)

1926
Record: 13-4  Coach: Red Hopkins
Notable wins: SEOAL record 6-1, beat Athens 22-2, Wellston 36-5, swept Chillicothe and Ironton twice
Special note: The Trojans held 4 opponents under 10 points
State tournament result: Lost to Zanesville in the Elite 8 (Zanesville won the state title)

1927
Record: 14-4  Coach: Red Hopkins
Notable wins: Undefeated in SEOAL play (Jackson, Gallipolis, Wellston, Logan, Pomeroy, Nelsonville, Athens)
Special note: Top players were Howard Doll, Johnny Fugitt, Murray Smith
State Tournament result: Lost to Dover in the state semifinals (Dover won the state title) PHS's first appearance in the Final 4

1929
Record: 18-5  Coach: Red Hopkins
Notable wins: Swept Ironton and Chillicothe twice, beat New Boston, Ashland (KY), Georgetown (KY), Manchester, Athens
Special note: Top players were Charles Vandervoort, Murray Smith (both second team all-state), Tod Cropper, John Fugitt, Paul Thompson
State tournament result: Lost to Dover in the state semifinals
