The 1955 Portsmouth Trojans not only won the school's 5th district title in 6 years, but at one point of the season they were ranked #1 in the AP Poll. PHS had an outstanding record of 20-4, only the 4th time in school history that a Trojan basketball team had won 20 games. In addition, it was the first time in Portsmouth's GOL history that the Trojans swept Middletown, Hamilton, and Springfield twice each. The only league losses that year were to Lima and Mansfield (Mansfield was a member of the GOL at that time). The only other loss in the regular season was to Columbus East. Curt Gentry led the Trojans in scoring, and later would be named to the Trojan Hall of Fame. Portsmouth won the GOL for the first time ever, with the 1961 team being the only other time the Trojans were league champions.

Portsmouth defeated Dayton Dunbar, Lancaster, Roger Bacon, Greenfield, Cincinnati Western Hills, Ashland KY, and Ironton twice. In the tournament, PHS beat Minford, Chillicothe, and Athens 24-22 (on a buzzer beater by Bruce Johnson). The Trojans then beat Greenfield again for the district championship. Tecumseh fell to the Men of Troy in the regional semifinal, but unfortunately, Cincinnati Hughes' tip-in at the buzzer gave the Big Red a 59-57 win in the regional champioship, ending a great season for Portsmouth.
