The 1956 Portsmouth Trojans' district championship was the school's 6th in 7 years. PHS compiled a record of 16-7, with a 5-5 mark in the Greater Ohio League (at that time Mansfield was a member of the GOL). In the regular season, Portsmouth gave a double whipping of Ironton, beat Cincinnati Western Hills and Cincinnati Hughes, and also topped Columbus East. The win over Hughes was a nice way to start out the season considering that the Big Red had eliminated the Trojans in the regional final the year before. Columbus Central was the only non-conference loss for PHS, coming by a score of 68-57.

In the tournament, the Trojans easily handled Minford and Portsmouth East. Waverly was a tougher opponent, as PHS squeezed by the Tigers 44-39. Lancaster was next, and Portsmouth hammered the Golden Gales 87-56. Lucasville Valley was next for the Trojans, and the Indians went down by a score of 79-52. The mighty Middletown Middies proved to be the end of the season for the Trojans, as they beat PHS 102-82. The Middies would go on to win the Class AA state title with an undefeated record.
